چکیده

Submillisecond response times and low operation voltage are critical to next generation liquid crystal display and photonic devices. In this paper, we review the recent progress of three fastresponse short-pitch cholesteric liquid crystal modes: blue phase (BP), uniform standing helix (USH), and uniform lying helix (ULH). This review starts with a brief introduction of device structures and working principles, and then highlights two competing electro-optical effects: dielectric effect and flexoelectric effect. Next, we compare their electro-optical behaviors, response time, temperature dependence, and contrast ratio. Based on our established simulation model, we are able to optimize the phase compensation scheme for improving the viewing angle and gamma shift of USH and ULH modes. Finally, we analyze some major challenges, which remain to be overcome before the widespread applications of these liquid crystal devices can be realized.

Fast Flexoelectric Switching in Bimesogen-doped Polymer Stabilized Uniform Lying Helix and Vertical Standing Helix of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

We report flexoelectric liquid crystal displays based on polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals with both uniform lying helix (PSULH) and vertical standing helix (PSVSH) modes. A method to enhance the flexoelectric switching of the CLC mixture is achieved by mixing nematic liquid crystal (NLC) constituents with the addition of a giant flexoelastic coefficient bimesogenic LC dimer into a...

Theory of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals.

A mean field theory is presented to describe cholesteric phases in mixtures of a polymer and a cholesteric liquid crystal. Taking into account an anisotropic coupling between a polymer and a liquid crystal, we examine the helical pitch, twist elastic constant, and phase separations. Analytical expressions of the helical pitch of a cholesteric phase and the twist elastic constant are derived as ...

Interlaced cholesteric liquid crystal fingerprint textures via sequential UV-induced polymer- stabilization

Two types of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) fingerprint structures, namely developable-modulation (DM) and growing-modulation (GM), can be contemporaneously prepared in polymer stabilized CLC (PSCLC) composites, to be mutually perpendicular in a repeatable and reversible voltage-switching process when the cell thickness to pitch length ratios (d/P) were appropriately chosen. PSCLC grating str...

Cholesteric Liquid-Crystal Displays Illuminated by Diffuse and Partially Diffuse Light

We report on the photometric and colorimetric properties of surface and polymer network stabilized reflective cholesteric displays. Both diffuse and partially diffuse illumination are used, the latter being an experimental approach to emulating typical room light conditions. It is shown that addition of polymer increases the field of view while decreasing angular dependence of the color quantit...
